Mother's Day

I thought I’d do a bit of research on Mother’s Day for this post and was actually pretty surprised that Mothering Sunday and Mother’s Day are not one and the same.  Although the two have become synonymous over time, they have a different history. Personally, I like the idea of a ‘Mothering Sunday’ tradition.  Although it was a religious custom, it seems to me that it must have been a lovely celebration – servants were given a rare day off to return to their mother church and spend time with their mothers and family.  In a time when people in service had little freedom or ease, I imagine it must have been a very welcome reprieve!
Mother’s Day as we know it now began in 1908 in the United States – it was a campaign by Anna Jarvis to make it a recognised holiday although according to The Wikipedia Article, she became disappointed in the commercialisation of it by the 1920’s.
Although I suppose, like with every other holiday, big business marketing has taken over to some degree, I still like the idea of celebrating the day. As a mum, it’s the one day where I’m guaranteed to be spoilt and have other people cook and look after things. Who’s going to say no to that?  :)
Personally, I love handmade things and little gifts with a heart. Even if you don’t have a budget, a little bunch of flowers is always a delight.  Cooking food for me is a sure way to win my heart too so I’m sure that applies generally!
I treasure every single card made for me by my girls, it always makes me happy to see the thought and effort they put into things and the best part of Mother’s Day is being made to feel special because that’s what really counts for hardworking mums :)
If you don’t fancy making anything or feel that it’s not your forte, don’t worry, I’m going to share some gift ideas just to make your life easier!
I’ve bought from the companies below so I can personally vouch for the quality and fab service!
Jewellery is always a favourite, I’ve gotten some pieces from Addiebeads and from Terramor, both lovely ladies who are passionate about creating beautiful jewellery.  I wear mine all the time and treasure the fact that they’re handmade and unusual.
I bought a Lotion Bar from http://www.lisaheeney.com/ and also got a Lip Balm. I love them both, the body bar is creamy and smells gorgeous. It’s perfect for my sensitive skin which also tends to dryness. I also got the Grapefruit and Fragonia lip balm, again it’s really creamy and so longlasting. My lips are also pretty dry but I’ve noticed a huge improvement since using my lipbalm, will definitely be getting more of these!
Finally, don’t forget to check out my Mother's Day section of my shop, lots of ideas but if you want to get anything before Sunday, make sure not to select a ‘made to order’ item as I
won’t have time to make and post.
